MSc (Rehabilitation Research)

To apply for the MSc (Rehabilitation Research - Physiotherapy) degree, candidates must satisfy the general requirements for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In addition, applicants must hold a university degree in Physiotherapy, or in a related area of study.

Admissions

Program Overview

Students registered in the program will be expected to obtain a minimum of 24 credit hours as follows:

  • Thesis - 12 credit hours
  • Course work - 12 credit hours

Course Work

Nine credit hours are obtained via required courses. A minimum of an additional three credit hours of elective courses will be selected based on the individual program of study approved by the Supervisory Committee.

Required Courses:

  • PHYT 5040.03 Graduate Seminar Series
  • PHYT 5590.03 Measurement and Instrumentation (or equivalent as determined by the Supervisory Committee)
  • Three credit hours in Research Design or Biostatistics

Residency

For full-time students the typical duration of the MScRRPT program is two years, as it is expected that upon completion of course work an additional year will be required to complete the thesis. Part of the residency period may, with permission, include time off campus. There are options to complete the program on a part-time basis.

To apply for the MSc Rehabilitation Research (Physiotherapy) degree, candidates must satisfy the general requirements for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

FGS Admission Requirements (Master鈥檚 degree):

  • Four-year Bachelor鈥檚 degree
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • English language proficiency

In addition, an applicant鈥檚 four-year Bachelor's degree must be in an area of study related to the MScRRPT program, including (but not limited to) physiotherapy, kinesiology, psychology, neuroscience and health sciences. Students with degree's unrelated to the MScRRPT program should contact the School to determine eligibility.

Application Process

This section outlines the application process for the MScRR program. To begin your application or for more information, see the Application page.

Applicants must:

1) Identify and connect with a potential supervisor in your area of research interest.

2) Submit to the Registrar鈥檚 Office the Graduate Application Form (on the Graduate Studies page), along with the $115 application fee.

3) Submit the following to the School of Physiotherapy via the email address MScRRadmin@dal.ca:

i. One copy of official transcripts from universities attended, sent directly to the School of Physiotherapy from the Registrar鈥檚 Office of the home institution.

ii. Two academic references. A work reference from someone who may comment objectively on your goals may be included in addition to the required academic references.

iii. A one-page statement of their experience, their goals and objectives, and the area of physiotherapy research to be studied.

iv. English language competency requirements as outlined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

International students can find further information on admission on the Graduate Studies website, then International Students. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, however applicants who wish to be considered for scholarship funding must meet certain timelines (see Scholarships below).

A minimum GPA of 3.7 (out of 4.3) is required for scholarship consideration, for students enrolled in full-time studies.

Scholarship funding is available on a competitive basis, from external agencies, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the School of Physiotherapy, and research supervisors.

Applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships are strongly urged to contact potential supervisors in the fall of the year preceding their application year, as the deadlines for external agencies are usually late fall.

Applications will be considered for FGS and School level scholarships, however applicants are expected to seek external funding before other sources will be considered. See Faculty of Graduate Studies or scholarship deadlines and more information.
