Directed Studies

An IDPhD student鈥檚 course load may contain a maximum of two directed reading courses. Directed reading courses allow for in-depth study on a particular topic under the guidance and supervision of the course instructor. There are two IDPhD courses, INTE 7000 and 7005. These are taken in numerical order and should be used to advance your research.

Students may not register for more than two Independent Study, Directed Readings or Special Topics classes in any graduate program. If you have arranged for this type of course, you MUST submit a fully completed description of the course to听idphd@dal.ca. The Director will review the proposed course and decide whether or not to approve it. If approved, the Director will permit you to register for the course. 听You may need additional permission from a Department to take a non-INTE course from them.

Should the instructor wish to make any changes to the originally proposed outline, you must first approve them and submit a copy to the idphd@dal.ca 听no later than four weeks after the beginning of the term in which the class is taking place

You should, then, submit the Directed Studies application form and the course syllabus tothe IDPhD Director, who will review your application for approval.听 Your instructor/supervisor should email the grade to the IDPhD Graduate Secretary (idphd@dal.ca) at the end of the applicable academic term. If the Directed Study is from within your academic unit or a program other than IDPhD, your instructor should submit the grade through that department.
