WWF鈥慍anada, Atlantic Region

As part of the WWF global network, founded in 1961 and active in more than 100 countries, WWF-Canada actively contributes to the achievement of the organization's mission: to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. With eight offices across the country, the Atlantic Region is the home to two of them, one in Halifax, NS since 2001 and one in St. John's, NL since 2007.

WWF-Canada's national oceans program is working on the water and in the marketplace to protect ocean life and support coastal livelihoods by:

  • Catalyzing a transition to sustainable seafood
  • Advancing smart oceans management, and
  • Building ocean economies, including conservation financing.

In Atlantic Canada, this means rebuilding the Grand Banks through cod recovery by 2020, as a globally significant symbol for successful fisheries reform; safeguarding our oceans spaces through sustainable planning processes and protected areas; protecting species at risk (like sharks, whales, sea turtles, cod and corals) to ensure they are on their way to recovery; and driving the Canadian marketplace towards more sustainability in seafood products.
