The School of Planning at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, Halifax, Nova Scotia is seeking a full-time instructor in a three-year, limited term appointment from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024.
мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, located in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is one of Canada’s top comprehensive research and teaching universities. Halifax occupies an unsurpassed natural setting on the Atlantic coast and is the academic, cultural, and economic centre of Atlantic Canada.
мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ the School of Planning: The School of Planning at the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ serves the Atlantic region of Canada as the only professional planning school east of Quebec. The School offers graduate and undergraduate professionally accredited planning degrees (Bachelor of Community Design honours and Master of Planning), an undergraduate degree in community design and a research-based graduate degree (Master of Planning Studies). It has a current enrolment of more than 50 graduate and 150 undergraduate students. We are a leading interdisciplinary planning school, equipping the next generation of planners to plan inclusive communities, through experiential learning, innovative research, and community partnership. Duties: The instructor will possess the education and experience to teach broadly and supervise students in both the undergraduate community design and graduate planning programs. The instructor is expected to teach up to six courses a year. Teaching assignments may vary depending on the needs of the school in each academic year. Courses may include (but not limited to) community planning methods, sustainable community design, site infrastructure, environmental systems in planning, dynamics of human settlements, theories, debate and ideas in planning, introduction to community design, introduction to policy-making, thesis proposal/thesis, conference module, integrative team project and planning studios.
The instructor will also assist graduate and undergraduate students in their senior independent projects (graduate) and honours theses (undergraduate). The instructor may assist the School of Planning with the annual conference and scheduling end of term presentation events. The instructor will serve on short-term committees in the School of Planning, as needed and as appropriate for the time frame of the appointment.
Qualifications: A candidate should hold an undergraduate or graduate degree in planning. A Ph.D. is desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of successful teaching at a university level related to the duties to be assigned. Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is desired; full membership would be considered an asset. Practicing planners with a post-graduate degree will also be considered for this position.
