The University of King’s College invites applications for the position of Dean of Students

Established in 1789, King’s is a small and immersive liberal arts college located in Halifax. It is renowned for its interdisciplinary humanities and journalism programs. With a student population of about 850, King’s students enjoy a rich academic experience in a close-knit community of scholars. King’s unique partnership with neighbouring мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, one of Canada’s 15 research-intensive universities, gives students many opportunities to combine and customize degrees.

Summary

The Dean of Students is responsible for residential life and non-academic student affairs. The Dean leads in the development and implementation of non-academic student affairs policies and programming consistent with the University’s strategic goals in order to foster a positive educational environment on campus and promote the health and well-being of the student body and residence staff. The Dean also offers mentorship and support to students and refers them to appropriate support services. The Dean lives and dines on campus.

The Dean reports to the President and works in co-operation and collaboration with other senior university, academic administration, and student support administration. The Dean supervises the residence staff. The Dean liaises with campus security, food services, Student Services units at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, Halifax Regional Police, Capital Health, appropriate federal and provincial government departments, and other resources for students in the broader community. The Dean is a non-voting member of faculty and is a member of the Senior Administration.

Duties

a) Collaboration with College leaders to serve the University’s academic mission;

b) Hiring of residence staff, and supervising some 12 residential dons, 30 student Patrol, 25 student front desk, 1 assistant dean, 1 receptionist, and 1 part-time secretary;

c) Managing training programs in drug and alcohol awareness/intervention, conflict resolution, mediation, mental health, and crisis intervention;

d) Collaborating with campus student leaders and Facilities and Food Services;

e) Administering the residence services budget;

f) Managing all aspects of the residence application process; assigning rooms and roommates;

g) Supporting the Registrar in recruitment and retention activities and the promotion of residential campus living;

h) Recommending resources to students, staff for personal and/or educational needs; acting as a mediator and resource on issues between and amongst students;

i) Responding and/or giving direction in student crisis/emergency situations;

j) Managing non-academic student discipline.

k) The Dean is invited to participate in the academic life of the University when and where appropriate

Education & Experience

Masters degree, and/or combined education and experience. Minimum of three years experience in a position requiring staff supervision and administrative responsibilities (preferably in the context of student services and human relations). Previous living and recent work experience in a university or college residence setting is essential.

Compensation, Accommodations and Particulars

Total Compensation is commensurate with experience. Further, the Dean receives a taxable benefit for accommodation and meals and parking. The Dean’s accommodation is an apartment on campus in the Alexandra Hall Residence. The Dean is supported in their regular training to remain aware of recent changes and developments in student services and housing.
