Position:   Sessional Instructor OCCU 2000.03 Fall term 2017

Pay rate: In accordance with CUPE agreement

Work Assignment:  The sessional instructor will be responsible for the delivery of OCCU 2000.03 (Occupation in Daily Living) and for the evaluation of students in the fall term 2017.

This class is concerned with occupation, defined broadly to refer not only to jobs but also to everything people do to look after and develop themselves, become involved in meaningful endeavours, contribute to communities, promote health, and more.

Requirements of position: Ph.D. or Masters degree with teaching and research related to occupation, everyday life or related areas.

This course provides a forum for students from different disciplines to critically examine, discuss and understand sanctioned and unsanctioned occupations within the context of individual, community, cultural and societal influences. Students will also critically examine debates and concepts in occupational science.

OCCU 5007.03 Research Approaches for Occupational Therapists
Winter term 2018

Work Assignment:  The sessional instructor will be responsible for the delivery of OCCU 5007.03 (Research Approaches for Occupational Therapists) and for the evaluation of students in the winter term 2018.

This course introduces theories and epistemologies underlying positivist and naturalist (quantitative and qualitative) approaches to research, particularly focusing on the issues that arise for research on occupation and in occupational therapy. We explore tensions between objectivity and subjectivity, the value of standardized measures, insider/ outsider issues unique to clinician-researchers, concerns about inclusion/ exclusion, ethical issues in research, and particularly power concerns inherent in research. We examine the epistemological and methodological ‘fit’ of various research approaches with occupational therapy, asking how research may best move the profession forward. The focus in this course is on critical appraisal of the social, political, economic, and ethical matters that shape the research enterprise. The aim is to develop astute consumers and critics of scholarly research.

Requirements of position: PhD or Masters degree. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) preferred.
