Assistant Dean of Students

SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The Assistant Dean of Students is a live-in don who assists the Dean of Students to ensure the health and well-being of residence life. In addition to the responsibilities of a residence don, the Assistant Dean provides leadership to the residence staff team, offers mentorship and support to resident students, and assists in the administration and management of residence life including residence programming, student conduct, and budget management.

The Assistant Dean assumes the responsibilities of the Dean in the Dean's absence and for the following:

  • Assume the full responsibilities of a residence don (see attached Residence Don Position Description)
  • Participate fully and assist in the planning and leadership of residence staff training (August 25 to September 03, 2016) and residence move-in day (September 4, 2016).
  • Assist with the preparation of residence for September and January openings and December and April closings.
  • Review daily incident reports and logs and coordinate response to those incidents in close collaboration with the dons and the Dean. This includes student conduct and emergency crisis response follow-up
  • Supervise the daily operations of the don and Student Patrol staff
  • Meet weekly with the Dean of Students to review progress on departmental goals and address emergent needs of the community
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Security supervisor to coordinate efforts to support students and uphold campus safety
  • Assume the Dean’s emergency on-call duties one week (Monday to Thursday) and two weekends (Friday to Sunday) per month, or the equivalent, during each academic term
  • Review end-of-term residence extension requests and communicate decision to students
  • Review, approve and track expense reimbursements for residence programming
  • Assist in the development and implementation of residence programming initiatives when and where appropriate

QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS

  • At least three years’ experience living and working in a university residence environment with responsibilities for student welfare, conduct and supervision
  • Undergraduate degree or higher (education in a related field an asset)
  • Previous training and education in student welfare and conduct as asset
  • Administrative experience an asset
  • Able to respond to emergencies in a professional, organized manner
  • Ability to think through complex situations and identify the resources necessary to respond to given situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Building Systems Technician
(Electrical Apprentice)

SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The Building Systems Technician (Electrical Apprentice) is responsible for maintenance (preventative, corrective and immediate repair) and mechancial work with an emphasis on electrical systems maintenance.

Under the Supervision and guidance of the Electrical Journeyman, the Building Systems Technicial is responsible for the following:

  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical wiring equipment including but not limited to panels, receptacles, appliances, lighting, motors, pumps, controls, etc.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, equipment and components to identify hazards, defects and the need for adjustment or repair (pumps, motors, HVAC, lighting systems) on 120V, 208V, 240V and 600V systems
  • Plan, layout, and install electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures based on job specs and Canadian Electrical Code including renovations/additions to residence rooms, offices, and classrooms
  • Perform all tasks in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and National Building Code
  • Installation and maintenance of card access system (residence room doors, and Corby System)
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on building mechanical systems including but not limited to inspection, maintenance and repair of belts/filters
  • Perform monthly inspections, repairs, and necessary replacements of fire safety equipment including fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire doors and pull stations
  • Assist with emergency generator maintenance and testing
  • Assist in the coordination of prompt and complete inspections and service to life safety systems by outside contractors (fire alarm, sprinklers)
  • Assist outside contractors with troubleshooting and repairing of HVAC Systems
  • Assist outside contractors/DAL with steam heat system problems
  • On Call – 24 Hour, 7 Day contact for University in case emergency services are required
  • Snow removal
