Posted by мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Libraries on April 1, 2016 in General Announcements

We are seeking input from students and faculty to assist with the 2016 Dal Reads book selection.

Have your say and become a part of this year’s program. View the entire list of books at: , then choose the top three that you think should become the official 2016 Dal Reads book.

Voting will take place from March 31 to April 11.

Dal Reads was developed in 2009, and is designed to encourage people in the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ community to share their love of books by reading the same novel. The program may include author readings, book club-type discussions, film viewings, and other events and opportunities to celebrate a shared love of reading. In addition, Faculty members may choose to include the Dal Reads book in their course curriculum.

In 2015, the Dal Reads Steering Committee decided to focus on first-year undergraduate students. By selecting this group of students, Dal Reads aims to provide a common intellectual experience that will serve as both an introduction to мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ and to post-secondary academic life in general. We hope that this format will encourage lots of discussion and the development of exciting new and innovative programming during the fall 2016 term.

The selection criteria and goals for Dal Reads are as follows:

DAL READS SELECTION CRITERIA
• must be written by a living author
• must be able to generate discussion and exchange of ideas
• must be appealing to a broad range of readers of varying ages, literacy levels, and life experience
• must be in print and available for purchase in paperback, eBook, and audiobook
• must be strongly written with elements that will generate excitement among readers
• The focus for the 2016 program will be on nonfiction books (but book selection is not restricted to this style).

DAL READS GOALS
• Provide first-year students with a common intellectual experience that will serve as an introduction to both мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ and post-secondary academic life in general.
• Establish a presence and awareness of the program
• Encourage reading for pleasure
• Provide an opportunity for connection (students, faculty, staff, undergrads, grads, regardless of area of study)
• Provide a unique activity and another option to socialize at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥
• Make reading a more social activity (as opposed to something one does alone)
• Opportunity for the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Libraries to promote the collection in a new way
• Connect with the curriculum and other university activities and interests

Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you around campus this fall with your copy of the Dal Reads selected book for 2016!Â
