PART-TIME ACADEMIC POSTING DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Biology / Life Sciences Centre / Faculty of Science

PAY RATE: In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement for the equivalent of a 3 credit-hour course.

PERIOD OF WORK: July 27-August 25, 2015

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for developing and posting online material to support SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science (disp.science.dal.ca). (1) Meet weekly with Integrated Science faculty to obtain direction and feedback. (2) Set up this interdisciplinary course on OWL, using existing material as a starting point and re-organizing the site to improve effectiveness. Components include Biology; Course schedules; Earth Science; Integrated sessions, field trips and labs; Psychology; Research Methods; Statistics; and Writing in Science. (3) Develop and post online practice quizzes for each Biology lecture, staring with material from Campbell’s Biology. (4) Consult with the Centre for Learning and teaching as required to determine appropriate techniques for preparing effective materials in an efficient manner.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree completed or in progress in Biology or a related field, with familiarity in all of the topics taught at the introductory (first-year) level. Expertise with learning management systems (especially OWL), and software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat). Evidence of excellent organizational skills, an ability to work to deadlines, and effective supervision of teaching assistants or demonstrators. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience developing online material for Biology undergraduate students and/or previous experience with an integrated science program.

(1) Meet weekly with Integrated Science faculty to obtain direction and feedback. (2) Prepare course schedules for fall and winter terms and detailed schedules for each week. (3) Revise and test integrated field trips and other exercises to incorporate technology (iPad, LabQuest, clickers, GPS). Take field trips to test the revised field trip exercises. Develop data integration links to move data collected by students to the Integrated Statistics component. (4) Assist faculty with the compilation of class data.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree completed or in progress in Science. Experience designing and/or teaching hands-on exercises to undergraduates, especially in the field. Expertise with Excel, Word and Acrobat. Evidence of excellent organizational skills, an ability to work to deadlines, and effective supervision of teaching assistants or demonstrators. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience using iPads for data collection, LabQuest instruments and probes, R statistical program language, environmental measurements in aquatic ecosystems, and/or previous experience with an integrated science program.
