INSTRUCTOR
Full-time, Limited-Term
DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY
Applications are invited for a full time limited term Instructor appointment in the Department of Biology at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥. This will be a 100% FTE appointment for 12 months beginning July 1, 2014 and ending June 30, 2015.
The Instructor will be responsible for overseeing the laboratory and tutorial portion of Biology 1030.03 (Biology for Engineers). The position involves developing, co-ordinating and troubleshooting the laboratory and tutorials. Other duties will include; lab set-up and general preparation; marking and recording; supervision of teaching assistants, and communicating with students and teaching faculty.
The Instructor will also be responsible for conducting laboratories in Biology 3050 (Developmental Biology) using both plant and animal materials. Knowledge of molecular aspects of Developmental Biology will be an asset. The position involves lab set-up; preparing tests, exams, marking and recording; teaching assistants meetings, and general preparation.
Other duties will include advising undergraduate students and serving on department administrative committees as required.
Candidates should have an advanced degree in biology and previous laboratory teaching experience. Candidates must also have demonstrated teaching ability, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as a team member.
Salary will be according to qualifications and experience, as determined by the Collective Agreement between The Board of Governors of мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ and the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Faculty Association. Working with course professors, the successful applicant will be responsible for the delivery, and the ongoing revision and improvement of the laboratory components of two second year core Biology classes, BIOL 2003, Diversity of Life I (vertebrates and invertebrates) and BIOL 2004, Diversity of Life II (plants and microbes). Maximum enrolments are typically 336 and 288 students. The Instructor is responsible for organizing the labs, supervising teaching assistants, and for class administration. Other duties will include advising undergraduate students and serving on department administrative committees as required.
