POSITION: Part-time Academic
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Statistics and Integrated Science / Faculty of Science

PAY RATE: In accordance with CUPE Collective Agreement for three half-credit classes
PERIOD OF WORK: July 1, 2013 through April 30, 2014.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for developing and teaching the introductory Statistics component (equivalent to STAT 1060) of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science (see disp.science.dal.ca). This new curriculum will engage first-year students through hands-on learning of Statistics in an interdisciplinary science context. Responsibilities are as follows: July-August 2013: Prepare integrated Statistics class materials and schedule in collaboration with the Integrated Science Biology, Earth Science, and Psychology professors. Set up an online data entry system to collect, compile and post class data from students. Prepare draft assignments (computer tutorials and problem sets). September-December 2013: Deliver the majority of the introductory Statistics component. Attend all field trips (usually on Thursdays or Fridays, September 6-October 18) and certain labs where students collect data, and incorporate student-collected data into class lectures, activities, and assignments. Set and mark test questions that are integrated with other subjects. Attend weekly Integrated Science faculty meetings. Supervise teaching assistants. January-April 2014: Finish teaching the introductory Statistics component. Provide statistical support to the research project component of the class. Prepare short online modules to extend statistical concepts and techniques beyond those covered in STAT 1060 but frequently encountered by our students in conducting their research projects. Revise the integrated first-year Statistics component based on feedback from the students, teaching assistants, and the other professors. Attend weekly faculty meetings. Supervise teaching assistants. Report on the curriculum development process.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Statistics or Life Sciences, or both, with considerable experience in applying statistics to data analysis in science. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., and/or previous experience teaching introductory Statistics to undergraduates within the context of interdisciplinary science.
