Getting ready for Office 365 ‑ Spring email cleaning

Posted by Information Technology Services on April 12, 2013 in General Announcements

Last week, we highlighted some of the key features of Office 365's Outlook Mail, which мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ will be moving to later by the fall:

  • Use business-class email through a rich and familiar Outlook experience you can access from your desktop or from a web browser using Outlook Web App. Mac users will also be able to access their email through Apple Mail.
  • A 25 GB mailbox and the ability to send attachments up to 25 MB.
  • Virtually anywhere access: connect with your email and calendars from your PC, Mac, web browser, Windows Phone, iPhone, Android phone, Symbian phone, and BlackBerry.
  • Built-in enterprise-grade anti-malware protection and anti-spam filtering.

If you're wondering what you can do to get ready for Outlook Mail, here are a few simple "spring cleaning" tips you can implement in the weeks ahead. While these aren't essential to the 365 changeover, they will make your life a lot easier for when our new platform is rolled out.

  • Deleting old messages: If you're the type of person whose available space in your email account is often in the red, it would be good to go through your email and only keep the correspondence that is either recent (the past few months, perhaps) or necessary.
  • Use folders to stay organized: If your account is set up properly with IMAP, the folders you make on your desktop are duplicated on our servers. (If you're uncertain, check your folders the next time you're logged into webmail on MyDal.) These folders will all move over to Outlook Mail, so use them to keep things organized.
  • Delete large messages: Are you using your email to store files that have been sent to you? It will make moving to Office 365 easier if your capacity is lower, so save these files and keep them on your computer or on shared drives. And remember that you can use as an easy, effective way to send large files.
  • Consider setting up a "personal" folder: If you're mixing professional and personal correspondence in your dal.ca email, setting up a separate folder for the latter is a great way to sort your messages.
