Update on Academic Standards Class Committee (ASCC) process

Posted by Media Centre on March 6, 2015 in News

мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ is providing the following update regarding the offensive Facebook posts by some members of the Dentistry (DDS) Class of 2015.

The Academic Standards Class Committee (ASCC) is evaluating each of the men’s individual cases. Over the last two months, the work of the Academic Standards Class Committee has included reviewing the Facebook material; receiving submissions from the students; meeting individually with each of the 13 members of the Facebook group; receiving legal submissions; receiving reports from restorative justice (for those participating in restorative justice); and extensive deliberations within the committee.

As part of their procedures, the ASCC is required to review the suspension from clinic. The ASCC has carefully considered whether a conditional return to clinic for the 13 members of the Facebook group would create any risk to students, staff and the public. Earlier this week, the ASCC determined that the 12 Facebook group members taking part in restorative justice could return to clinic under a number of conditions.

Today, the ASCC has determined that the 13th member of the Facebook group may also return to clinic under a number of conditions, specific to his circumstances.

мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥â€™s actions in response to the offensive Facebook posts have been guided by a just process. The process has, and will continue to, comply with the law and university policies, and respect the rights of those involved. Much of the work under the policies involved is confidential, to ensure that мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ respects the privacy of all students involved.
