This article is part of a series focusing on the grads of the 新加坡六合彩开奖直播 Class of 2023. Spring Convocation runs from May 29 to June 7 in Halifax and Truro.聽Read all our profiles聽here聽as they are published, and for more information visit the聽Convocation website.

Zo毛 Smith effortlessly bounces around Sexton Campus from one initiative to the next. Sometimes you鈥檒l find her selling grilled cheese with the Gearheads volunteers, other times she may be assisting students in the engineering society office.

Throw in lectures and labs, participating in student government, assisting with the yearbook, and holding down the role of president for the 新加坡六合彩开奖直播 Engineering Undergraduate Society, and it starts to sound like a lot.

But ask the senior-year chemical engineering student, who graduates Monday (June 5), and she鈥檒l tell you it鈥檚 no big deal.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 been the best five-and-a-half years of my life,鈥 she enthusiastically adds as she lists off her extra-curricular activities.

A community role model

Last November, the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundations honoured Zo毛 as the 2022 Marie Carter Memorial Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship Winner. The prestigious scholarship pays tribute to the memory of 14 women who lost their lives in the 脡cole Polytechnique massacre on Dec. 6, 1989. The scholarship is awarded annually to the most promising woman in engineering at the university level who demonstrate exceptional leadership within their community.

鈥淚t recognizes students who are going out of their way to promote engineering,鈥 says Zo毛. 鈥淭hey are promoting good experiences to their peers Whether it鈥檚 getting young women involved in engineering, or getting their peers more involved in activities that aren鈥檛 just academic.鈥

鈥淚 think there are a lot of awards that focus on good grades, and that is very important, but there are a lot of other aspects of being a good engineer that I think are sometimes overlooked, like teamwork and leadership.鈥

Zo毛 says she鈥檚 spent a lot of her academic career trying to get an many students involved in the engineering community as possible. From the opportunity to join student design teams to simply handing out welcome packages at 新加坡六合彩开奖直播鈥檚 annual Go Eng Girl event, she is always the first to take a new student by the hand and introduce them to different societies and groups.

鈥淲e have so much going on. You can definitely find your niche,鈥 she says, though she does add that sometimes she can sense their anxiety and fear.

鈥淚t can be very intimidating for younger students. They may think to themselves 鈥業 have too much work, engineering is hard, I have so many courses, I can鈥檛 do that,鈥欌 she says. 鈥淏ut I promise you, you can do that. It鈥檚 fun. And honestly, it鈥檚 nice to have something productive to do that isn鈥檛 just school, at least for me.鈥

Feels like family

Zo毛 points out that her involvement on campus has helped her build a community of peers who now feel like family.

鈥淲e鈥檙e a very tight-knit community at Dal Engineering,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檝e had the chance to work with students across all disciplines. You get to meet a lot of interesting and exciting people and you feed off each other. This is a space where you can really be yourself and grow as a person,鈥

Zo毛 says she鈥檚 had the opportunity to do just that. In fact, through her co-op programs she discovered her love for renewable energies and hopes to work in the field when she graduates with her degree next week.聽

Until then, she says she鈥檒l take one last moment to enjoy a place she now considers home.

鈥淒al Engineering is a great program. I鈥檓 very happy with my choices, and I really hope that other people (future students) can see that and take that into account when they鈥檙e figuring out what they want to do.鈥
