CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#23)

No changes at the top in national rankings

March 1, 2016

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are no changes at the top this week in the CIS national rankings as McGill (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), UNB (men’s hockey), Toronto (women’s track and field) and Windsor (men’s track and field) all hold on to their pole position.

In women’s basketball, the top-ranked Martlets (14-1) close out the regular season on Saturday with a home tilt against UQAM (9-5), which sits second in the RSEQ standings. McGill extended its winning streak to 11 straight conference games over the weekend with a 70-36 domination of Bishop’s.

In men’s hoops, the Ravens (16-3) wrapped up league play this past weekend with convincing road wins over Laurentian, 87-67, and Nipissing, 68-39. The reigning five-time CIS champions open the playoffs at home on Saturday against an opponent still to be determined.

In men’s hockey, the Varsity Reds (23-3-2 / 3-0 playoffs) swept their best-of-five AUS semifinal series against UPEI to qualify for the conference final, as well as the University Cup national championship set for March 17-20 in Halifax.

In track and field, the Varsity Blues remain on top of the national women’s rankings despite settling for second place behind Guelph (178 points to 131) at the OUA championships. On the men’s side, the top-ranked Lancers captured the OUA banner thanks to a 31-point cushion over Guelph (174-143).

The CIS track and field championships are set for March 10-12 at York University in Toronto.

NOTES: The CIS winter championship season got under way this past weekend with Toronto sweeping the swimming titles in Quebec City and host Brock claiming both wrestling banners in St. Catharines, Ont....
