The following email memo from President Richard Florizone was sent to members of the Dal community this afternoon:
To our мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ community:
On November 13 we shared with you the sad news that one of our students had passed away. Today the Medical Examiner and Halifax Regional Police have released a statement that the cause of death for this young woman was alcohol poisoning.
Alcohol consumption by our students — on and off campus — is something that we take very seriously. It is an issue that is being faced by universities across North America. At мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, as part of our alcohol harm reduction strategy, we provide a wide variety of programs to educate students on the harms associated with consuming alcohol and to provide alternative activities. Continually improving and enhancing our programs is an ongoing priority. Given what we have learned today, we will again review our programs carefully to see if there is anything that we can do differently.
Today we have also shared with our students the supports and programs on campus that they may wish to access, as well as links to additional information. Given that this is a very stressful time of year for students and that we are also heading into the holiday season, we’ve asked our students to remember to stay safe and use alcohol responsibly.
Sincerely,
Richard Florizone
President, мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥
