Women’s Hockey
The women’s hockey team kicked off their pre-season on the right note, scoring three goals in the first period en route to a 3-1 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Monday night at Alumni Arena. Both teams made it to the semifinals in the AUS playoffs last season, but failed to qualify for the finals.
Newly recruited, Laura Ellerton scored 8 minutes into the game off a feed from Elizabeth McArthur, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Just two minutes later, Lisa MacLean got on the score sheet, beating Huskies’ goalie Rebecca Clark. Taylor Reichheld was credited with the helper.
The scoring frenzy continued in the first period as Brianna Soper scored a shorthanded marker for the Huskies, cutting the Tigers lead to one.
Jesse Rietveld gave the Tigers some insurance in the second period scoring the final goal of the game seven minutes into the period. The Tigers would hold to their 3-1 lead, securing their first pre-season win.
The Tigers only had 14 shots on target while the Huskies peppered мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ goaltenders, Mati Barrett and Jessica Severeyns, with 48 shots.
The women’s hockey team next pre-season action comes on October 3 at StFX.
Women’s Soccer
The Tigers split their weekend set with a 1-0 win over the Huskies on Friday and a 2-1 loss to the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Saturday. The ladies came into the weekend with just one win on the season and sitting outside the playoff picture.
On Friday night the Tigers were down the road at Huskies Stadium in search of some much needed points. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ keeper, Katie Morgan continued her dominant play, with her third straight clean sheet.
Morgan MacIntosh scored the lone goal of the game in the 58th minute giving the Tigers their second win of the season.
Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on Saturday afternoon, the Tigers were unable to hang on for their third straight win. Shea Jeffrey-Novak, мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥â€™s leading scorer was credited with the first goal of the game, her third of the campaign.
Jessie Noseworthy countered for the Sea-Hawks scoring as the first half was coming to an end.
The two sides were tied at a goal a piece until Emily Bailey broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute scoring the game winning goal for the Sea-Hawks.
Katie Morgan had her fourth straight start and recorded two saves in the outing.
The Tigers 2-3-1, now sit in a tie for sixth place in the AUS table with seven points. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥â€™s next action comes on Friday, October 2 when the ladies travel to Acadia.
Men’s Soccer
Bezick Evraire continued his goal scoring tear over the weekend in the Tigers 2-0 win over Saint Mary’s and 2-2 draw against Memorial. After a three-goal weekend, Evraire is now tied for first in the AUS and CIS scoring race with 8 goals
The majority of Friday night’s game under the lights at Huskies Stadium went scoreless until SMU goalkeeper, Christian Oxner was dealt a red card in 74th minute.
Evraire wasted no time capitalizing on the shorthanded Huskies side, scoring just three minutes after Oxner was sent off. Less then 10 minutes later, Evraire put the game away, scoring his second and putting the Tigers up 2-0.
Jason Ross had his third clean sheet of the season, stopping all four shots on target.
The Tigers were at home on Saturday hosting the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The boys were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead but the Sea-Hawks would not go away easily, scoring two second-half goals to tie things up.
Evraire scored the lone first half goal off a feed from Isaiah McCullough. Aaron Hoyle stretched the Tigers lead to two, scoring in the 58th minute. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ looked like they were on their way to a six point weekend but Ben Collingwood and Tyler Kirby scored in the 66th and 78th minutes leaving the game in a draw.
It was a successful weekend for the Tigers who now sit tied for third in the AUS standings with a 3-2-1 record. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ will face second place Acadia on Friday night with the winner taking sole possession of second in the AUS.
Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team had back-to-back pre-season games over the weekend against St. Thomas and UNB. The Tigers dropped both contests and are now 0-3 in the pre-season.
On Friday night, мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of St. Thomas in Springfield, N.S. Fabian Walsh and Andrew Wigginton both scored for the Tigers, while Brendan Duke had two assists.
The Tigers were in Truro Saturday night playing the UNB Varsity Reds. UNB proved to be too much, beating the Tigers 6-2. Connor Donaghey and JP Harvey had the goals for the Tigers and Wendell Vye made 33 saves in the game.
The men’s hockey team is off to the US next weekend, facing off against UMass-Amherst and Sacred Heart.
Cross Country
The Tigers were in Antigonish this weekend for the StFX Invitational. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s Jenna MacDonald (23:12) and Kate Scallion (23:28) finished first and second, respectively in the women’s 6km race, leading the Tigers to a first place team finish.
Angus MacIntosh was the top finisher for the Tigers in the men’s 8km race, grabbing the 10th spot in a time of 27:57. Colin Long finished 11th in a time of 28:14.
мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s next competition will be at the Moncton Invitational in New Brunswick on Saturday, October 17th.
Women’s Volleyball
With the help of tournament MVP Mieke DuMont, the Tigers took home the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Invitational this weekend, dropping just two sets along the way. The tournament consisted of four teams: the Acadia Axewomen, Saint Mary’s Huskies and UdeM Aigles Bleues.
The Tigers faced off against the Aigles Bleues in the first game of the weekend on Friday night. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ cruised to a 3-0 victory over UdeM, winning 25-18, 27-25, 25-8. Third-year left side, Anna Dunn-Suen had a game high 12 kills.
On Saturday, мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ had a doubleheader, first up was the Acadia Axewomen. Both teams came into the Saturday afternoon game with a 1-0 record. The Tigers grabbed their second win of the tournament beating the Axewomen 25-18, 25-20, 25-12. The duo of Dunn-Suen and DuMont each had five kills in the match. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ libero, Marisa Mota had eight digs in the game.
The Tigers were at it again Saturday night facing the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 8pm. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ dropped their first set of the weekend en route to a 21-13, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory. The rematch of last years AUS championship didn’t disappoint as both teams battled hard all night. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ finished the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record.
On Sunday afternoon the Tigers squared off against the Axewomen in the мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Invitational championship game. мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ took the match with a 3-1(25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15) win. Acadia gave the Tigers their toughest match of the weekend, where every set seemed like it could go either way. Dunn-Suen led the Tigers with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Mota and newcomer Courtney Baker were both named to the all-star team.
мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ will be in action next on October 30th at Acadia in their regular season debut.
