Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Congratulations to the following professors, instructors, and alumni from the Department of Theatre who were honoured recently with Merritt Awards for the highest achievements in Nova Scotia theatre in 2010. Members of faculty who received awards were as follows:

  • Susan Stackhouse (Theatre): Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as Nat in Rabbit Hole聽at Neptune Theatre
  • Susan Leblanc-Crawford (Acting): Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her role as Sam in Five Easy Steps to the End of the World聽with Zuppa Theatre
  • Leesa Hamilton (Costume Studies):聽 Mayor鈥檚 Award for an Outstanding Emerging Theatre Artist
  • John Beale (Acting):聽 Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as John Hale in The Crucible聽with Two Planks and a Passion Theatre
  • Zuppa Theatre, comprised of Dal Theatre alumni Alex McLean, Susan Leblanc-Crawford, Ben Stone, and Stewart Legere, won Best Production for Five Easy Steps to the End of the World. 聽FASS alumna Louisa Adamson was recognized for Outstanding Lighting Design for the same show.

Faculty of Health Professions

Congratulations to David Gardner (Pharmacy) who, along with co-author Michael Teehan, have had their book, Antipsychotics and their Side Effects, published. The book is a clinician鈥檚 guide to rational antipsychotic treatment selection and patient monitoring. The book comprehensively reviews antipsychotic treatment selection and patient monitoring, reviewing antipsychotic side effects and providing support for treatment selection and monitoring via comparative reviews of each antipsychotic.

Congratulations to Marilyn MacKay-Lyons (Physiotherapy) who has been awarded the Canadian Physiotherapy Association鈥檚 most prestigious award, the Enid Graham Memorial Lecture. Dr. MacKay-Lyons will present her lecture at Congress 2011 in Whistler, British Columbia.

Shapiro Institute for Education and Research and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. The conference will take place in Wellesley, Massachusetts in May 2011.

Congratulations to Micheal Ungar (Social Work) upon the publication of his book, The Social Worker, A Novel, published by Pottersfield Press and being distributed by Nimbus Publishing. The launch party is being held on April 26, co-sponsored by the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, with all profits from book sales being donated to Phoenix Youth Programs.聽

Congratulations to Jaime Wertman (student, Biology) who won the Canadian Botanical Association鈥檚 regional undergraduate award for best oral presentation in Botany, entitled, 鈥淒o mitochondria catalyse programmed cell death in the lace plant,鈥 at the Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences (APECS) Biology conference held in March in Halifax. Ms. Wertman also won first place for her oral presentation, entitled, 鈥淢itochondria:聽 supplies energy for life and signals for death in the lace plant,鈥 at the 3rd Annual Northeast Undergraduate Research Development Symposium (NURDS), held in March in Maine.聽 (Supervisor:聽 Arunika Guanwardena)

Congratulations to Don Weaver (Chemistry) upon receiving the Heinz Lehmann Award for 2011, the premier award in psychiatric research from the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology.聽 It recognizes outstanding contributions by a single individual in the field of research in neuropsychopharmacology in Canada, based on originality and uniqueness of approach to clinical or laboratory research that had led to new, significant neuropsychoparmacological knowledge or concepts, or to the development of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of mental diseases, as evidenced by a large body of neuropsychopharmacological research done over a period of years. The award will be presented in May in Montreal.

Congratulations to Jessica Wilson, Matt Vaughan, Annina Margreth and Luke Hilchie (students, Earth Sciences) who competed successfully at the Atlantic Geoscience Society Annual Meeting and Colloquium held in Fredericton, New Brunswick in February. Ms. Wilson won the Rupert H. MacNeil Award for best student paper, and Mr. Vaughan received honourable mention for the same award. Ms. Margreth was co-winner of the Graham Williams Award for best student poster.聽 Mr. Hilchie received honourable mention for the Sandra Barr Award for best graduate student oral presentation.

Congratulations to Rebecca A. Jamieson (Earth Sciences) upon receiving the Best Paper Award, Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2010, for The Grenville Orogen explained?聽 Applications and limitations of integrating numerical models with geological and geophysical data.聽 In:聽 鈥淟ithoprobe 鈥 parameters, processes and the evolution of a continent,鈥 Jamieson, R.A., Beaumont, C., Warren, C.J. & Nguyen, M.H., (Lithoprobe Synthesis Volume II, eds R M.
