Congratulations to Cynthia Neville (History) whose recent book, Land, Law and People in Medieval Scotland (Edinburgh University Press, 2010) was shortlisted for the National Library of Scotland Scottish Research Book of the Year, sponsored by the Scottish cultural group the Saltire Society. Scottish Research Book of the Year Award was established in 1998.聽Overall, the awarded book will add to the knowledge and understanding of Scotland and the Scots.聽聽聽

Lisa Weatherhead

Congratulations to Lisa Weatherhead (External Relations/Health Professions) on receiving the 2010 FUSION GO Humanitarian Award.聽 FUSION Halifax is an organization for 20-40 year olds in Halifax that works to bring people together from all sectors to inspire active citizenship, create dynamic networks and generate great ideas.聽 This Award recognizes someone who has made a large impact in Halifax by voluntarily giving of his or her time and talents to benefit the city.聽

Marilyn MacDonald

Congratulations to Marilyn MacDonald (Nursing), selected as this year鈥檚 recipient of the Hughes Career Achievement Award from the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, University of San Diego. Dr. MacDonald was selected from a number of exceptional nominees to be the 17th recipient of this prestigious award.

Congratulations to Abram Gutsher and Ben Ridout (students, Master of Health Administration) who were shortlisted for the International Administrative Fellowship for Clinical Support Services with ARAMARK Healthcare.聽This is a highly competitive fellowship open to health administration graduate students across North America.

Congratulations to Mohammed Al-Hamdani (student, Masters of Health Administration), recently awarded one of two national TD Bank Financial Group Scholarships that are offered through the BBPA to Black students who have an outstanding academic record and contribution to the community.聽Mr. Al-Hamdani has volunteered with various health organizations, tutors Black students in statistics, biochemistry, marketing, and health promotion courses, and has helped Black students use the university writing and mathematics resource centres to help them improve their academic performance.

Congratulations to Charlotte Crosbie (student, Bachelor of Laws/Masters of Health Administration) and Miguel Cortel (student, Masters of Health Administration) who attended the UBC Model United Nations 2011, representing the delegation of Chana.聽Ms. Crosbie participated in the UN Human Rights Council, while Mr. Cortel was Ghana鈥檚 representative in the World Health Organization (WHO) Committee.聽The conference consisted of foreign policy debates with the objective of writing draft resolutions that reflect your countries stance. Mr. Cortel was a finalist for the Best Speech Competition, and won the Outstanding Delegate Award for the WHO Committee.

Congratulations to Anne Marie Whalen (Pharmacy), and Tannis Jurgens (Pharmacy) who were recently awarded the Pharmacotherapy Best Practice Award by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists for their project, 鈥淒evelopment and Evaluation of an Instrument for the Critical Appraisal of Randomized Controlled Trials of Natural Products.鈥 The award will be presented in Toronto this month at the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacist Professional Practice Conference.

Congratulations to Ingrid Sketris (Pharmacy) who was inducted as an inaugural member of the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) Decade Club. This club honours and recognizes individuals who have had an ongoing relationship with NSHRF for 10 consecutive years by fostering and supporting NSHRF through awareness of the value of health research in the province of Nova Scotia and beyond.聽Dr. Sketris also received an 鈥淯nsung Hero鈥 award from the NSHRF and was featured in their annual report.聽She was also recently appointed to the Health Council of Canada as a non government Councilor representing the Province of Nova Scotia.

Congratulations to Neil MacKinnon (Pharmacy) and team, including Andrea Scobie (Interdisciplinary PhD student), upon receiving the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy鈥檚 2010 Innovation Award.聽This award, in the amount of $48,832, will help to expand the team鈥檚 SafetyNET-Rx initiative further.聽SafetyNET-Rx, the first of its kind in Canada, provides the framework for pharmacy staff in the community setting to implement a continuous quality improvement program (CQI) that applies standardized business processes, integrated information systems, and commonly used CQI practices to reduce, better report, and learn from medication errors and other adverse events.

Congratulations to Gorica Kurilic (student, Master of Business Administration), one of six students in Atlantic Canada to receive a $10,000 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. Ms. Kurilic will receive official recognition of her award at a luncheon in March at the Abercrombie House in Pictou County. The award recognizes excellent scholastic achievement, career aspirations, entrepreneurial ambitions, extra-curricular and community activities.

Congratulations to William Currie (Anatomy & Neurobiology) upon being acknowledged by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for his commitment to the Foundation, particularly for the work Dr. Currie has undertaken serving as a member of their Scientific Review Committee.

Congratulations to Kishore Pasumarthi (Pharmacology), 2010 recipient of the Dr. Gregory Ferrier Award by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.聽This honour recognizes excellence in research and is given annually to the researcher with the highest-rated grant-in-aid application to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.聽Dr. Pasumarthi is recognized for his work as he attempts to understand the ways in which the heart muscle can regenerate after injury.聽

Boris Worm

Congratulations to Boris Worm (Biology) upon receiving a 2011 E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship. The announcement states that 鈥淒r. Worm鈥檚 research has helped change perceptions of the precarious state of the world鈥檚 oceans鈥︹澛 The NSERC website states that 鈥渢he Fellowships are awarded to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising university faculty who are earning a strong international reputation for original research.鈥
