I鈥檓 a Beluga Grad. If you鈥檙e between the ages of 18 and 35 and remember dancing around to Baby Beluga, chances are good you鈥檙e one too. 鈥淏eluga Grad鈥 鈥 鈥淏G鈥 鈥 is singer-songwriter Raffi Cavoukian鈥檚 affectionate nickname for the children who loved his 鈥70s and 鈥80s children鈥檚 records.
Most Beluga Grads are now grown-ups, many with kids of their own. But Raffi Cavoukian, better known as 鈥淩affi,鈥 hopes that they鈥檒l keep dreaming big.
To the joy of children 鈥 not to mention their BG parents 鈥 Raffi still makes music. However, he now focuses on 鈥渃hild-honouring鈥 鈥 a philosophy of respect and love which 鈥渓inks person, culture, and planet with the child at the heart of it.鈥 Like so many of Raffi鈥檚 projects, child-honouring is rapidly gaining momentum, and a big part of its star appeal comes from its overwhelming engagement with sustainability.

He sees sustainability as a healing process. 鈥淚f we do not restore the world鈥 what kind of sustainability could we hope to sustain? If we stop damaging (natural systems), they can come back.鈥
But action needs to be taken quickly: 鈥淲hile there鈥檚 still time, the only moral thing to do is to detoxify the environment鈥 there鈥檚 a sense of urgency.鈥 Raffi emphasizes the importance of overall empathy when engaging in any worthwhile cause. Child-honouring, like sustainability, is respect and love for the possibilities offered by the future: for Raffi, to embrace the one entails the other.
Naturally, no pun intended, sustainability is a key issue for Raffi Cavoukian. 鈥淭he good news,鈥 he adds, 鈥淚s that there鈥檚 a design revolution underway right now. A green revolution.鈥 Like 新加坡六合彩开奖直播, Raffi is at the forefront of that green revolution: he鈥檚 currently putting the finishing touches on a project that couldn鈥檛 have had better timing 鈥 or a more well-qualified founder.
鈥淚鈥檓 about to launch a centre for child-honouring on Saltspring Island鈥 it鈥檒l be a multidisciplinary campus.鈥 Sustainable environmental policies are vital to the project. 鈥淐hild-honouring is an integrative philosophy, and sustainability is an integrated, restorative philosophy. If sustainability is about raising a generation of earth stewards, there鈥檚 no better way to do that than during their early years.鈥
So what kind of sustainable activity will the Saltspring Island project tackle? 鈥淲e鈥檒l be looking at children鈥檚 environmental health鈥 The young child is the most vulnerable to environmental conditions. Children are the most vulnerable beings we have.鈥
That鈥檚 a philosophy Raffi has always lived by 鈥 for instance, he refuses to allow his music to be used in children鈥檚 advertising. His concern for children and the environment is also reflected in his music 鈥 take his award-winning ecology album Evergreen Everblue (1990), or his more recent rockabilly number Cool It. Mr. Cavoukian鈥檚 website, raffinews.com, describes Cool It as 鈥渁 musical call-to-action on climate change鈥 with guest vocals by David Suzuki.
Raffi also advises making personal changes at home, such as buying local, organic foods, in the name of sustainability. His comic touch brings to light what often gets overlooked 鈥 sustainability can be simple, rewarding, and even fun. 鈥淭here are so many ways to do right by the child.鈥
So what鈥檚 Raffi鈥檚 advice to the whole world, right now 鈥 Beluga Grads and beyond? 鈥淩espect the children in your care, and love them so much that you create a world fit for their dreams and for their future.鈥
And what should we expect when Raffi descends upon 新加坡六合彩开奖直播? 鈥淚 might unveil my new song called SustainABILITY,鈥 Raffi mentions casually. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a five-minute dancing tutorial鈥 it鈥檚 reggae.鈥
Raffi鈥檚 sustainable reggae? You don鈥檛 have to be a Beluga Grad to say that sounds intriguing.
