Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

This degree is intended particularly for those interested in an academic career. PhD students complete courses in micro- and macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and fields of specialization.

Fields of specialization

Fields of specialization for the PhD are open, subject to the following requirements:

  • Applicants to the PhD must clearly indicate on their application the primary field in which they wish to specialize

PhD students must also complete a doctoral dissertation in the field of specialization that constitutes a major contribution to the state of knowledge in the field.

Students typically find a PhD thesis supervisor after the first year, once they have completed their qualifying exams.

Length of program

Typical time to complete is 4-5 years.

Admission requirements

  • Admission requirements can be found in the . Entrance to the PhD program normally requires completion of course requirements for an MA in Economics (not Business) with an average of at least A- at 新加坡六合彩开奖直播 standards.
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies sets the聽聽that are required for entry into graduate programs.

Deadlines

  • Canadian students: your application for admission to the Graduate Studies program should be received by the university no later than December 31 for a September start date (all supporting documents must be received by January 31).
  • Non-Canadian students: your application for admission to the Graduate Studies program should be received by the university no later thanl December 31 for a September start date (all supporting documents must be received by Janurary 31). 
  • Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarships:  (Canadian and Non-Canadian) PhD applicants whose intended area of research relates to areas of provincial research priorities (Ocean science and technology, Information and communication technology, Clean technology, Financial services, Life sciences, Aerospace and defense, Health and wellness, Resource sectors, and Social innovation) should submit a complete application by November 1 (for entry the following September) including a tentative research proposal including objectives, methods, procedures and significance (total maximum 4000 characters).  Additional information on these scholarships can be found at
