A Correlation of the Triassic Systems of Nova Scotia and the Eastern United States with a Possible Origin of the North Mountain Basalts.
(PDF -听 3.3 Mb)
The petro1ogy and geochemistry of the Nova Scotia Triassic volcanics are considered in the tectonic framework of eastern North America. The pattern of sedimentation and magrmatism is similar throughout the region. Source areas of the extrusives range from large dykes to possible central eruptive areas , and a case is made for considering the- plugs near Goshen, Guysborough County, as a conduit for the North Mountain Basalts of Nova Scotia.
These plugs (diiabasic intrusions) are approximate1y l00 miles east of the closest North Mountain basalts. This discrepancy can be accounted for if a dextral strike-slip of 110 miles is proposed for the Cobequid-Chedabucto fault in the early Jurassic. This type of displacement appears to agree with the tectonic evolution of Nova Scotia.
