Call for Proposals:
If you are interested in hosting a Picchione Lecture, on a topic that would interest the general public, please submit a proposal outlining your plan. 聽If your proposal is selected, all expenses related to the Lecture will be paid, up to a maximum of $8000.00.

Dr. Kevin Kain, MD
Dr. Kain is a Clinician-Scientist, Canada Research Chair and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, UHN-Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Kain has worked extensively in low resource settings including New Guinea, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, DRC, Ethiopia, Gabon, Mozambique, Madagascar, Peru, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Bhutan, Indonesia and the Amazon basin.聽His research is focused on major global infectious disease threats, particularly as they pertain to maternal-child health; global equity, knowledge sharing and the transfer of appropriate technologies and the training of clinicians and scientists in low resource settings, empowering them to address their problems in a sustainable fashion. His current projects include: PI of multi-site randomized placebo-controlled intervention trial in Kenya to reduce preterm birth and neonatal sepsis 鈥 the leading causes of under 5 death globally; and as co-PI of a $11.5M EU-funded multi-site trial (Mozambique, Gabon and Ethiopia) to evaluate a new rapid point-of-care triage test for sepsis.
Dr Kain has received several awards including: the聽鈥淐. Woolf Award鈥听蹿辞谤听鈥淓xcellence in Teaching鈥, University of Toronto, U of T 鈥Department of Medicine Research Award鈥, a聽鈥淐areer Scientist Award鈥, Ontario Ministry of Health,聽鈥淏ailey K Ashford Medal鈥聽from the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, awarded for聽鈥淒istinguished work in Tropical Medicine鈥; and the聽鈥淪ornchai Looareesuwan Medal鈥, from Mahidol University in Thailand for聽鈥淟eadership and outstanding research accomplishments in malaria鈥.
