Doing Business in Emerging Markets

Do you want an exciting opportunity to travel to an emerging market?

Thanks to a generous donation from Export Development Canada (), the Faculty of Management is offering an exciting opportunity for 14 students to travel as part of an international experience course, 鈥淒oing Business in Emerging Markets.鈥 The calendar description is shown below, along with some important dates for you to consider.听The program began in 2017 with the first group of students visiting China. Previous year鈥檚 students have visited Chile, Peru, Argentina, Southeast Asia, India and Brazil. This year's trip locations will be to Vietnam and Indonesia!

Students will be selected from each of the school鈥檚 programs (BComm, BMgmt and CRMBA) to participate in the course. You will be working in small groups with Canadian businesses interested in exploring expansion opportunities in the host country. The course will conclude with a two week trip to the country we study, where you will participate in corporate visits, meet with Government Trade Officers, as well as visits to major tourist destinations. 听In addition to your regular tuition fees, the following costs you will incur are:

  • a $1,500 non-refundable deposit;
  • ~$150 Travel Health Insurance (available through StudentVIP);
  • immunizations;
  • the fee to obtain a travel visa;
  • your lunches and dinners while travelling;
  • any spending money you wish to take.

All other expenses including airfare, hotels, breakfasts, transportation, and tours will be covered by the program!

The Course

COMM/MGMT 3710 Doing Business in Emerging Markets
This course is designed to give students an understanding of the traditional challenges and opportunities Canadian businesses face when expanding their business to emerging markets, including those in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern and Central Europe. Through this course, students will be expected to acquire a holistic understanding of the political, cultural, social and economic challenges companies face when considering the benefits of expanding to and conducting business in emerging markets.

How to Apply

Applications will open by September 16th until October 4th, 2024. To apply please have your unofficial academic record, resume, and a brief 150 word (or less) paragraph on why you are interested in the course.听听

Interviews will be held in late October, with placement decisions sent out in early November.听

For the 2025 intake, undergraduate preference will be given to students in their 3rd year of their programs.听
