Admission Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Nursing
Candidates for the PhD (Nursing) program must meet the following criteria. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Have completed a four-year (or equivalent) bachelor鈥檚 degree in Nursing
- Hold a master鈥檚 degree in Nursing or another relevant discipline, awarded by a recognized university.听
- Be licenced to practice as a Registered Nurse in a Canadian province or foreign country
- Have a minimum admission grade-point average of 3.7听(Applicants with a GPA of less than 3.7 are still encouraged to apply as we consider all aspects of the application equally.)
- Provide a study plan outlining area of research interest, how it fits with the research program of the proposed supervisor, preliminary thesis research plans and career plans
- Provide three examples of written work:
Required:
- One first-authored peer-reviewed manuscript under review or published in a recognized journal
Two other required works, for example:
- One co-authored peer-reviewed manuscript under review or published in a recognized journal
- Evidence of grantsmanship, e.g., submitted scholarship application (provincial, health research funding organization)
- Accepted peer-reviewed poster abstract
- Research report (to health care organization, NGO, government)
- Evidence of knowledge translation, e.g., clinical workshops
- Have a faculty member from the SON willing to supervise as the Primary or Co-Supervisor.
- Provide the following funding information:
- A copy of the applicant鈥檚 completed and submitted Harmonized Scholarship Process Application. (scholarship application deadline is December 1st)听听 OR
- Letter of sponsorship from the international applicant鈥檚 agency/government听听 AND
- Other funding already applied for/ potential sources of funding (e.g., Tri-Council, Killam Pre-Doctoral).
- Provide a curriculum vitae
- Provide two sets of transcripts covering all post-secondary course work
- Provide three letters of reference, including two from professors familiar with the candidate鈥檚 earlier graduate work and one from an employer
- Be prepared for full-time study
A personal interview with the Associate Director, Graduate Studies, is also required.
