Earlier this month, the federal government officially announced the 2020-2021 recipients of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. 鈥淭he Vanier鈥 is the federal government most prized awards for PhD students. Over the past few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been reaching out to the Faculty of Health community through messages and videos to provide updates on academic and administrative plans, and to check in and stay connected. Over the spring, all of our lives were upended, and very little was known about when things were going to return to the way things used to be.

As we have seen recent racial tragedies occur across Canada, the United States and beyond, it has become imperative that change happens immediately to ensure that our Faculty takes proactive steps to combat anti-Black racism and support our Black students, faculty, staff and community members. I want to say unequivocally that Dal Health stands with our Black faculty, students, staff and community members. We condemn racism and acts of violence against the Black community.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research have awarded $100.8 million dollars over 16 years to nine new Indigenous health research networks across Canada. This represents the largest single investment in Indigenous health research in Canadian history.

Dr. Ingrid Waldron (School of Nursing) has been awarded the 2020 Society for Socialist Studies Errol Sharpe Book Prize for her book turned Netflix documentary, There's Something In The Water.

Dr. Jacqueline Gahagan started her research career in Ottawa in the 1980s, doing work on HIV. One day, she went to the Gays of Ottawa Centre and saw homophobic and AIDS-related graffiti on the building. Since then, Dr. Gahagan鈥檚 undergraduate (Anthropology and Sociology - Carleton University), Masters (Sociology - University of Windsor) and PhD (Medical Sociology 鈥 Wayne State University) were all related to HIV and health equity.
