Congratulations to our staff, faculty, alumni, students and friends on their recent achievements:
Faculty Achievements
- Dr. Jian Wang of the School of Human Communication Disorders was awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant in the amount of $130,000 over five years for "Working Mechanisms of Ribbon Synapses in Cochlea." The project will explore the functional roles of key proteins in the ribbon synapses between sensorial cells and neurons in the cochlea.
- Dr. Joseph Byrne, Director of the School of Health Administration recently published Drawing on Dr. Byrne's 35 years as a researcher, clinician and administrator, this book is the first of its kind specific to the Canadian healthcare system.
- Dr. Janet Curran, School of Nursing and Dr. Pat McGrath, IWK/NSHA, are co-principal investigators on "Building a strategy to support parent partnership in patient oriented research in the Maritimes." The project has been funded by a CIHR/SPOR Patient-Oriented Research Collaboration Grant in the amount of $37,127.
- Dr. Ruth Martin-Meisner, School of Nursing received a CIHR SPOR Patient Oriented Research Collaboration Grant in the amount of $55,000 for "Evaluating the involvement of patient and family advisors in quality and safety teams in Nova Scotia." Dr. Martin-Meisner also recieved a NSHRF Catalyst Grant in the amount of $49,984 for "What does patient-centred care mean for Nova Scotians with multimorbidity."
- Dr. Heather Neyedli, School of Health and Human Performance, received a CFI/JELF grant in the amount of $171,336 for "Brain Gain - Neuroimaging for health and mobility in older adults."
- Dr. Michael Ungar, School of Social Work received an SSHRC Partnership Grant in the amount of $500,000 per year over five years for "Canadian refugee child, youth and family research coalition."
- Dr. Alice Aiken, Dean, Health Professions, Sara Kirk, School of Health and Human Performance and Janet Knox, NSHA recived a CIHR HSPR Training Modernization Start-Up Grant - Eastern Canada in the amount of $100,000.
- Dr. Cheryl Kozey, School of Physiotherapy received a Canadian MSK Rehab Network Gran in the amount of $10,000 for "A pilot study of multi-centred osteoarthritis gait biomechanics research: the first steps toward Canada-wide rehabilitation studies." Dr. Kozey also received a CIHR Planning and Dissemination Grant in the amount of $10,000 for "GaitNet Osteoarthritis Canada: Engaging researchers, clinicians and stakeholders to mobilize gait biomechanics research aimed at improving knee osteoarthritis management."
- Dr. Audrey Steenbeek, School of Nursing received a CIHR Catalyst Grant in the amount of $150,000 for "A Holistic Approach to Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment among Inuit communities: Using Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) to Guide the Development of Culturally Competent Care."
- Dr. David Westwood, School of Health and Human Performance, received a NSERC Discovery Award in the amount of $125,000 for "Effects of prior and future movements on current actions."
- Dr. Ingrid Sketris from the College of Pharmacy was part of the "Provider Prescribing Behaviours and Impacts on Costs" panel at the Conference Board of Canada's "Healthy Canada: Access to Affordable Medicines" conference in Toronto on April 27th.
Student Achievements
- Logan Lawrence, PhD Health student received a Honorary Level 2 Killam Predoctoral Scholarship in the amount of $30,00 per year for three years. Logan also received мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s President's award, which covers his tuition. Logan is supervised by Dr. Janet Curran, School of Nursing and Dr. Pat McGrath, IWK/NSHA.
- Timothy Disher, PhD Nursing Student has been awarded a Vanier Scholarship in the amount of $50,000 per year for three years. Timothy is supervised by Dr. Marsha Campbell-Yeo and Dr. Ruth Martin-Meisner, School of Nursing.
- Justine Dol, PhD Health received a Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship (QES) - a fully funded international student mobility grant that provides opportunites for recipients to study internationally. Justine will be working as a Research Assistant at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Justine also received Ð¼ÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s President's award, which covers her tuition. Justine is supervised by Dr. Marsha Campbell-Yeo and Dr. Gail Tomblin Murphy, Nursing.
- Phillip Joy, PhD Health received a CIHR Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral Award in the amount of $30,000 per year for three years. Philip also received Ð¼ÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s President's award, which covers his tuition. Philip is supervised by Health and Human Performance's Dr. Matt Numer and Dr. Sara Kirk.
- PhD Nursing student Jenny Rand has received a CIHR Institute of Aborignal People's Travel Award in the amount of $2,800 for "Inuit and Western ways of knowing in academic research: Examining IQ and community-based participatory research."Â Jenny is supervised by Dr. Audrey Steenbeek, School of Nursing.
