Congratulations to our faculty, staff, students and alumni on their recent acheivements:
Faculty
- Cheryl Kozey, Professor in the School of Physiotherapy and Acting Associate Dean (Research) recently received the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes members of мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥'s graduate studies community who have provided long and meritorious service to graduate studies and graduate students.
- Sean Rourke of the Ontario HIV Treatment Network is the nominated PI for the CIHR Centre for REACH in HIV/AIDS (REACH 2.0) that has been funded for 5 years with a budget of approximately $1M per year. Two of the multiple PI's are Lois Jackson (Health and Human Performance/AHPRC) and Jacqueline Gahagan (Health and Human Performance). The collaborative team also has several co-applicants including Matt Numer (Health and Human Performance). Only two centres were funded in the competition, and this centre was ranked first.
Research
- Sara Kirk (Health and Human Performance), received a CIHR Population Health Intervention grant for "Healthy Eating in Recreation and Sport Settings (HERSS)." Sara is a principal investigator on this grant and Laurene Rehman (Health and Human Perfomance) is a co-investigator. This project will assist in evaluating the implementation of HERSS guidelines by the province.
Students
- Monica MacDonald - incoming MSc RRPT student in the School of Physiotherapy - has been awarded an NSERC CGS-M. The CGS-M is a national level scholarship acknowledging the top MSc students in the country. The funding will support her MSc work examining ho connections in the brain are altered when learning or re-learning motor tasks.
- Kerry McInnes - incoming MSc RRPT student in the School of Physiotherapy - was awarded a summer studentship from the Canadian Stroke Network. Kerry will be working this summer with Dr. Shaun Boe (Physiotherapy) on a project related to EEG-based neuro feedback for stroke recovery.
- Jessica Shannon (Health and Human Performance) received the Physical Health Education Award, and will have the opportunity to attend their student leadership conference in September, 2014.
- Becky Spencer (Interdisciplinary PhD) received a Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) Scotia Scholars Award. The goal of the Scotia Scholars Awards is to support the development of the next generation of highly qualified health researchers and leaders in the Nova Scotia health research enterprise. Becky is supervised by Laurene Rehman (Health and Human Perfomance) and Sara Kirk (Health and Human Performance).
- Josh Goreham (Health and Human Performance) received the President's Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Josh was one of only three recipients across campus, and was presented with his award at Senate on May 12, 2014.
Schools/Colleges
- The School of Physiotherapy was granted accreditation by Physiotherapy Accreditation Canada (PEAC) until April 30, 2020.
Events
-  On March 31st, 2014, students at the College of Pharmacy hosted a Faculty Appreciation Night to thank their professors for all of the hard work they do. As well as a potluck and live music, there was a wall of comments written by students, describing how each of their professors has a positive influence on pharmacy education. A highlight of the evening was when past and present students came forward to honour retiring College of Pharmacy Director Rita Caldwell. It was clear that Rita has had a great positive impact during her time at the College, and that she will be missed by students and faculty alike.
- The мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ Student Pharmacy Society (DSPS) hosted their Annual DSPS Awards Night and Professor's Auction on April 9, 2014. Following their awards ceremony - congratulations to all the deserving recipients - there was a charity auction with items donated by faculty and students. The auction raised $4,400 for Phoenix, a non-profit organization based in Halifax that offers shelter and support for homeless or at risk youth. The auction was attended by Jenna Adlakha from Phoenix. The DSPS would like to thank everyone who came out to support the award recipients, as well as for their contributions to a worthy cause!
- The School of Health and Human Performance hosted the Canadian Congress on Leisure Research from May 20 - 24th, 2014. Approximately 150 delegates from across Canada and internationally were in attendance. Kudos to the organizing committee (all from the School of Health and Human Performance):
