2014 FHP Faculty and Student Research Awards

May 13th was an exciting day for Health Professions researchers at Dal. Graduate students took part in the annual Integrated Health Research Training Partnership (IHRTP) graduate research day which saw students from the three health faculties present their research. While faculty attended the FHP鈥檚 spring Full Faculty meeting where faculty who demonstrate a significant commitment to research innovation, impact and excellence are recognized.

Faculty Awards

The 2014 Senior Research Excellence Award recipient is Dr. Jeff Karabanow. Jeff received his PhD from Wilfrid Laurier and is a professor with the School of Social Work. He has worked with homeless young people in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Guatemala. He has published numerous academic articles about housing stability, service delivery systems, street health, and homeless youth culture. He has completed a film documentary looking at the plight of street youth in Guatemala City and several animated shorts on Canadian street youth culture. Dr. Margot Latimer is the recipient of the Early Career Research Award. Margot earned her PhD from McGill University and completed a post doctorate in neuroscience at Laval University before joining Dal鈥檚 School of Nursing. Margot has held clinical roles at the IWK since beginning her nursing practice in 1989 and these have inspired her research endeavors which focus on the professional and contextual factors that enhance clinician's use of evidence with the goal of reducing children鈥檚 pain experiences. Congratulations Margot!

Graduate Student Awards

Masters of Science in Kinesiology student Logan Lawrence was the recipient of this year鈥檚 Faculty of Health Professions Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Research. An engaged researcher who has worked on a broad range of research projects at 新加坡六合彩开奖直播, Logan is completing his thesis on how environment plays a role in physical activity and sedentary behaviour in older adults with colorectal cancer. Logan received his reward from the FHP鈥檚 Associate Dean Research, Cheryl Kozey, and gave a presentation on his research at the IHRTP research day.

A number of FHP graduate students took part in the Integrated Health Research Training Partnership (IHRTP) graduate research day with poster presentations. The College of Pharmacy鈥檚 first-year Master student, Heather Blundon and the School of Physiotherapy鈥檚 second-year Master student Ishika Sharma won 1st prize for their poster presentations.
