Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- List the most likely organisms that cause pharyngitis
- Compare and contrast clinical presentation of bacterial pharyngitis and viral pharyngitis
- Complete a physical assessment of the head and neck and recognize clinical signs of strep pharyngitis
- Recognize complications of bacterial pharyngitis
- Describe advantages and disadvantages of clinical decision rules
- List criteria for diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis
- Refer patients with sore throat who present with complicating factors
- Identify patients that may benefit from microbiologic testing for possible bacterial pharyngitis
- Describe the sensitivity and specificity of rapid antigen detection tests, molecular tests, and throat cultures in diagnosing pharyngitis
- Complete a throat swab for a patient with suspected bacterial pharyngitis and interpret results
- Identify goals of therapy for management of pharyngitis
- List options for treatment of bacterial pharyngitis
- Recommend pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management for patients presenting with bacterial pharyngitis
- Provide patient education for management of pharyngitis
- Apply principals of antimicrobial stewardship in caring for a patient with pharyngitis
