How much will your program cost?

The amount you pay for graduate studies varies by program. Here are some steps that will help you discover what you can expect to pay.聽

  1. Use the tables聽below to determine the minimum length of the program you鈥檙e going to take. Keep in mind that thesis-based programs can take longer to complete than what is listed. Talk to your department or school to get a sense of what to expect.

  2. Navigate to the聽Fee Calculator聽on the聽Money Matters聽website. This will provide a good estimate of how much the first year of your program will cost, including tuition and the associated fees.聽

  3. Many thesis-based master鈥檚 programs charge more in the early stages of the degree, with a reduced rate in subsequent years called 鈥渃ontinuing fees鈥. The duration of 鈥渇ull-time program fees鈥 is provided in the table below, after which continuing fees will apply.聽聽

  4. The continuing fees that apply after the full-time program fee duration has passed is approximately $950/term plus ancillary fees.聽 Exact amounts can be found under the tuition fee schedule, near the end of the table, under "Other 鈥 Continuing Fee".

Transferring from a master's program to a PhD?

As of September 2019, new international PhD students are no longer charged international differential fees.

If you're a master's student who began your graduate program in September 2019 or beyond and then transferred (fast-track) to a PhD program, you will be reimbursed any international differential fees paid, where applicable, and the difference in tuition between master's and PhD programs paid from the start of your master's program to the date of your transfer to a PhD program. If eligible, reimbursed fees will be sent to you via electronic funds transfer (ETF) approximately six-to-eight weeks after the start of the term in which the transfer takes effect, with no action required on your part.

This refund is not included in the FGS-enforced scholarship cap for PhD students. If you were funded by departmental sources (such as a research grant) during the refund-eligible terms of your program, please discuss potential impacts on future departmental funding with your supervisor or graduate coordinator.

If you have any general questions about this process, please contact GradFunding@dal.ca.
