Description
Conference travel grants can be awarded to full-time graduate students in a master’s or doctoral thesis program. In order to be eligible, students must present a poster or paper based on the results of their graduate thesis research at a national or international scholarly meeting or conference.
You are eligible for one FGS travel grant per degree, and you must be registered in the term when applying and the term that the conference occurs. Supervisor approval must be signified by signature on the application. The maximum amount awarded is $500; this amount is subject to change.
Travel costs can be claimed only for travel from Halifax to the location of the conference and must be based on the lowest available fares. Abstract, poster, banquet, and visa costs are not eligible. For conferences within 100km of Halifax, only registration costs can be claimed; travel costs and per diem costs are not eligible.
Health coverage: Please be advised that international students on Study Permits are eligible for MSI insurance services only in Nova Scotia. All students should ensure they have adequate health coverage while out of the province.
If approved, you will receive a letter of confirmation via email and approximately three weeks later the grant will be deposited into your bank account. Please note: conference travel grant decisions are not subject to appeal.
Eligibility criteria
- You must be a registered graduate student at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥.
- Must apply for travel grant at least one month before the date of the conference at which you will be presenting a paper or poster.Â
- You are eligible to apply for one travel grant during the course of your program.
- If you are planning to take part in an International Learning Experience, please first consult with faculty advisors and the International Centre at exchanges@dal.ca prior to finalizing any international travel plans. You will be required to provide FGS with a confirmation email from the International Center indicating that all the required components (pre-departure session, registration with international SOS, emergency information form, etc) have been completed. Please visit the International Centre's website and review the information on International Learning Experiences.
Application overview
Complete the and submit the application and required backup by email to financial.coordinator@dal.ca at least one month before the date of your conference.
If approved, you will be asked to submit a request for the advance via Chrome River.
Chrome River is an automated solution designed to reduce paper and create a more efficient process by electronically creating, submitting and approving expenses. To access Chrome River, look for the link in under the Employee Support section in Services and Resources.
Clicking on the Travel and Expenses (Chrome River)Â tile will take you to the login page where there will be detailed instructions.
Select Affiliation = Student and Report Type = Travel Advance. For the tiles, select Travel Grant (FGS).
Within 30 days following the conference, log in again to Chrome River to complete your travel claim (with receipts) in order to clear the advance.
As of January 2023, graduate students from the Faculty of Science may apply for a one-time supplement of up to $500. To apply, fill in the Graduate Thesis Student Conference Travel Grant Application and check the box marked “By checking this box, I am requesting to be considered for the one-time Faculty of Science Conference Travel Grant Supplement. I give permission for FGS to share my Graduate Thesis Student Conference Travel Grant application information and decision letter with the Faculty of Science Dean’s Office."
To be eligible for the supplement, you must be traveling to attend an in-person conference at least 100 km from Halifax and be otherwise eligible for an FGS travel grant. If approved, you will receive confirmation via email from the Faculty of Science Dean’s Office with information on how to claim the funds.
Please note that only conference travel grant applications received from January 2023 onwards are eligible for the Faculty of Science supplement.
