Description

Faculty of Graduate Studies emergency bursary awards are meant to help students overcome temporary financial emergencies such as medical costs or other unforeseen expenses.

Required supporting documentation:

  • Before being considered for an emergency bursary, you must first apply for a Canadian Student Loan and Provincial Student Loan. Copies of assessment sheets must be attached.

  • If you have not applied for one of these loans, an explanation of the reason why must accompany the application.

  • If you are not eligible for either Canadian or Provincial student loans, please enclose the non-eligibility letter from the government.

Examples of ineligible expenses:

  • Replacement of stolen or damaged electronic equipment

  • Payment of past debt

  • Quarantine expenses related to COVID-19

Other considerations:

  • All sections of the application must be complete and accurate.

  • The maximum value of an emergency bursary is $1,000.

  • Applicants may be asked to provide receipts to support emergency costs incurred.

  • Social Work students should apply for a bursary through the online bursary application on the Registrar's Office ·É±ð²ú²õ¾±³Ù±ð.Ìý

  • Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry students should apply for a bursary through their respective faculties.

Eligibility criteria

  • You must be a registered graduate student in the second year or later of a full-time program.

  • You must be experiencing a temporary financial emergency, such as unforeseen medical expenses, and demonstrate financial need. 

  • You must have applied for government student loans and/or a bank line of credit, where available.

  • If eligible, a maximum of one FGS emergency bursary will be granted to you per 12-month period. 


Application overview

  1. Complete the online and include any requested supporting documentation along with your application.
  2. Applications are reviewed monthly by the FGS Emergency Bursary committee. If awarded, the funds will be applied directly to any outstanding balance on your university account. Otherwise, you will receive your funds by e-transfer within two weeks of the decision. 
  3. There are no appeals on bursary decisions. If your circumstances change after a bursary application is denied, you may submit a second application.Â
