Abstract:

This study introduces a novel framework that maximizes renewable energy penetration and enhances grid reliability within interconnected energy networks. It addresses challenges posed by the inherent variability of renewable energy generation and the complexities of managing energy storage and power-to-x (P2X) conversion technologies. For this purpose, it develops a dynamic two-stage optimization model whose results help ensure that power grids can operate with both foresight and adaptability, making strategic day-ahead decisions and real-time adjustments based on unfolding uncertainties. A weather-adaptive deteriorating inventory model adds realism to the management of storage units by accounting for the decay or deterioration of stored energy over time, resulting in more accurate and efficient optimization of the entire energy system. This study also explores the impact of ambient weather conditions on thermal capacity to improve the utilization of transmission infrastructure, reduce congestion, and facilitate the integration of RESs. The study employs a hybrid approach combining the Benders decomposition algorithm with robust optimization to manage the computational complexity arising from the stochastic nature of renewable energy generation and demand fluctuations. The study's findings, based on the Nova Scotia power grid, underscore the potential for advanced energy storage solutions, such as battery storage and P2X synthesis, to enhance the integration and performance of RESs. This robust and adaptable approach demonstrates significant reductions in power spillage and improvements in grid stability. It also offers practical insights for transitioning to sustainable energy systems through interconnecting to form networks.

Speaker Biography:

Mohammad Asghari, Ph.D., serves as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within the esteemed Department of Industrial Engineering at мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ in Canada. Concurrently, he holds the position of an instructor at Cape Breton University. His academic journey commenced with the attainment of a B.Sc. degree in the realm of industrial engineering – industrial production from the distinguished University of Science and Technology in Iran, back in 2010. Subsequently, he secured an M.Sc. degree in industrial engineering from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in Iran, marking the year 2013 as a pivotal point in his academic growth. In pursuit of further excellence, he went on to accomplish a Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in Iran, culminating in the year 2021. His research interests are dedicated to developing innovative approaches to design, optimizing, and validating sustainable strategies for transitioning to a net-zero world, with a focus on the transportation and energy sectors.
