ADVISING

What do Academic Advisors do?

  • We听advise听students on course selection and degree requirements, and offer general guidance on academic matters. If you're unsure of which courses you want to take, or which you need to complete for your degree, get in touch with an advisor.
  • We听liaise听with the Office of the Registrar and the department as a whole in matters pertaining to students' academic standing. Transfer credits, honours applications, placement tests, you name it! We're you're link to the administration.

Academic Advising Services provide accurate, up-to-date information, tailored to address your needs. Advising can be done in person, by mail or by telephone.

Student Matters

Dr. Rebecca Babcock (asstdeanfass@dal.ca听or 902-494-6898), is the Assistant Dean of Student Matters and consults with students who are experiencing difficulties in the following situations:

Rules, regulations and procedures

At the recommendation of the Registrar's Office, the Assistant Dean helps students with problems regarding rules, regulations and procedures that cannot be resolved at the Registrar's Office. A student should always听first听听if there is a problem with an academic regulation. The Registrar's Office will refer students to the Assistant Dean if they cannot help them with an academic problem.

Academic difficulties

A student experiencing difficulties in any course(s) because of illness, personal reasons, financial problems, or other extenuating circumstances shall听first make an appointment with the professor(s) concerned听to discuss the problem and explore options. If this is not satisfactory, the student can听then meet with the Chair of the department(s) concerned听to seek advice. If the student is unable to solve the problem at the departmental level, she/he can meet with the Assistant Dean to discuss further options.

Academic advice and counselling

Consult your听听if you require听specific advice听about your major, honours options and program requirements. If you need听general advice听about courses, bursaries or admissions, you should consult an听听or make an appointment with an听academic counsellor in Student Services. For academic problems that require a听specific waiver听(determined at the Registrar's Office) or for those cases that have been specifically referred, students shall consult the Assistant Dean of Student Matters.
