Job Title: Innovative Waste Management Research Intern
Job Location: мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ - Truro
Rate of Pay Type: Hourly
Job Description:
The Innovative Waste Management Research Program is based out of the Department of Engineering in the Faculty of Agriculture, мÓÆÂÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥. The focus of this research program is to understand soil chemical transformations and dynamics from managed environments and to evaluate ways to increase value of organic by-products normally considered wastes. The research program has field and laboratory-based activities to help accomplish the goals set out by different projects. Our interest is in developing measures and insights into soil health parameters, studying organic matter decomposition dynamics, evaluating and designing new technologies to process organic materials to extract added value, and to support new areas of opportunity related to organic materials considered to be waste. We are looking for undergraduate students who are looking for experience over the summer (2019) working in a research laboratory conducting a wide range of activities, both indoors and outdoors.
Responsibilities
The research intern(s) will support a range of field and laboratory activities in the IWM Research Program, as directed by the Principal Investigator or assigned supervisor. Typical responsibilities can/will include:
Soil sampling in a field setting from research plots using soil corers;
Plant tissue sampling and analysis in the field;
Preparation of soil and plant samples for analysis;
Chemical extraction of soils or plant materials for analysis;
Collecting water samples and preparing for analysis;
Preparing materials and setting up laboratory or greenhouse based experiments;
Inputting data from analyses into computer spreadsheets;
Support cleaning field research facilities, laboratories, glassware, and any other maintenance tasks as required;
Working in an outdoor composting facility will be part of the job and will involve working with decomposing organic matter. Personal protection equipment is provided but potential candidates should be aware of potential for working under conditions of significant odours. All other tasks will be as directed, and where relevant training has been provided to accomplish the tasks.
Job Requirements:
Candidates should be enrolled in an undergraduate university degree (BSc, BEng, BASc), at any stage in program, and be prepared to work in a dynamic research environment conducting work related to organic wastes, analytical chemistry, environmental management, and composting. Candidates should be able to work outdoors and perform physical tasks, including soil sampling, carrying moderately heavy items/equipment. Candidates will also be able to conduct work in the laboratory such as weighing samples, conducting chemical extractions of soils or plant materials, grinding soils or plant materials, and potentially operating analytical instrumentation. Candidates should have experience working with computers and preference will be given to individuals who have experience working in a research environment.
Additional Information: The preferred candidate will have a science, environmental science, biology, chemistry, agricultural science, soil science, or engineering background. However, other qualified candidates will be considered.
Preference for individuals with a valid driver’s license. First Aid Training, WHMIS certification, and Occupational Health and Safety certification (optional assets)
