Practical training schedule and registration

The following workshops will be offered to provide basic practical training for personnel working with laboratory animals. Training workshops require a minimum of 3 participants up to a maximum of 8 (this can be impacted by pandemic restrictions). Additional training in more advanced techniques can be provided as needed. The Mouse: Recommended Technical Procedures 

Material covered in this workshop includes:
  • A video presentation covering humane handling and restraint methods, sexing and identification, anesthesia techniques and recommended procedures for blood collection and injection methods in the mouse. A discussion on characteristics of healthy rodents using an interactive CD-ROM.
  • A hands-on session where participants may then practice the observed techniques.

The Rat: Recommended Technical Procedures

Material covered in this workshop includes:
  • A video presentation covering humane handling and restraint methods, sexing and identification, anesthesia techniques and recommended procedures for blood collection and injection methods in the rat. A discussion on characteristics of healthy rodents using an interactive CD-ROM.
  • A hands-on session where participants may then practice the observed techniques.

Introduction to Anesthesia

Material covered in this workshop includes:
  • A presentation covering preanesthetic considerations, monitoring anesthetic depth, injectable vs. inhalant anesthesia, anesthetic emergencies, post-op care and analgesia.
  • A demonstration of an anesthetic machine, intubation equipment and monitoring devices.

Introduction to Aseptic Surgical Technique

Material covered in this workshop includes:
  • A presentation covering standards for surgical facilities, sterilization of instruments/implants, patient and surgeon preparation, and maintenance of a sterile field.
  • Participants will work in small groups to practice gowning, gloving, opening sterile packs, establishing a sterile field, instrument handling, and basic suturing using suture boards and rat/mouse carcass.

Please note:  Participation in practical training sessions does not fulfill the requirement for obtaining a Certification Number.  Certification numbers are assigned after successful completion of a written test based on the Laboratory Animal Introductory Course.
