鈥楧on鈥檛 give up.鈥 It sounds simple, but it鈥檚 a tough lesson that Ukrainian native and Halifax-based lawyer,聽Igor Yushchenko (LLM鈥12), has learned throughout life鈥檚 hardships 鈥 and continues to apply to what lies ahead. 鈥淥bstacles will happen, but when you overcome them, you learn a valuable lesson,鈥 he says. 鈥淐oming to Canada has taught me this.鈥
Growing up in Ukraine, and following in the footsteps of his hard-working, successful parents 鈥 both accountants 鈥 Yushchenko dreamed of a career in law. 鈥淚 wanted to be a crown prosecutor 鈥 to put bad guys in jail and make the world a safer place,鈥 shares the聽Aurum Award听谤别肠颈辫颈别苍迟.
After earning his bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in law in Ukraine, he landed a crown attorney placement in Kyiv, but quickly learned it wasn鈥檛 a right fit. 鈥淚 saw a lot of police brutality in that role, and realized I鈥檇 rather protect people from that.鈥
New beginnings
Looking to further his education in law and explore a new country, Yushchenko arrived in Canada in September of 2011 to study at 新加坡六合彩开奖直播, where he eventually earned his聽Master of Laws degree聽in 2012.
It was an eye-opening time, he shares. 鈥淐ompared to my studies in Ukraine 鈥 where if a professor tells you to do something, you do it and you don鈥檛 ask questions 鈥 I chose subjects and professors I enjoyed at Dal, and actually talked to those professors. It created a sense of trust and openness. That was life changing.鈥
With a plan to return to Ukraine after earning his Dal degree, Yushchenko says he experienced second thoughts. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when someone told me I couldn鈥檛 practice law here in Canada; that I鈥檒l face challenges getting my license. Something inside of me said to prove them wrong.鈥
Yushchenko made the decision to settle in Halifax, earning his license to practice law, creating聽聽鈥 specializing in real estate, corporate law, personal injury, civil litigation and immigration 鈥 and marrying and starting a family with his 新加坡六合彩开奖直播 sweetheart (which he says is his greatest accomplishment).
鈥淭hat was the hardest thing,鈥 he says. 鈥淒enying that it鈥檚 impossible, accepting that it won鈥檛 be easy, and facing the challenges that may lie ahead. But, still striving for the life you know you deserve.鈥
A harsh reality
Over ten years after settling in Halifax, the news of Russia鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022 shook Yushchenko鈥檚 world.
His family was in Kyiv when things started. 鈥淚 wanted to get them out as fast as possible,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t took three or four days for them to cross the border, and no sleep. But they are now here in Nova Scotia. They are safe.鈥
But Yushchenko felt he needed to do more. 鈥淚鈥檓 a lawyer, I know about immigration, so I knew I needed to use my experience 鈥 my knowledge 鈥 to help others.鈥
He quickly joined forces with Halifax-based lawyer, Jason Woycheshyn, and worked with the Nova Scotia and Canadian governments to create new programs to help expedite Ukrainian immigration. 鈥淔or the first three or four months, the phone didn鈥檛 stop ringing,鈥 shares Yushchenko. 鈥淎nd even once those families left Ukraine, many kept calling to talk to us, asking for recommendations on where to settle, what jobs to look for.鈥
Over a year after the start of the war in Ukraine, Yushchenko 鈥 like many of us 鈥 says he hopes things will be over soon. 鈥淭here will be a massive amount of work needed to help rebuild that country,鈥 he says. 鈥淟awyers will be needed, and I want to be a part of that team. I am ready.鈥
Yushchenko adds that it鈥檚 his drive to help others that keeps him going. 鈥淚 feel like I can provide the motivation that [prospective immigrants] may be missing,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 want others to see me as an example 鈥 to see that as an immigrant, you can still achieve anything in this life. Living your ideal life is not a club for only blessed and chosen people. It鈥檚 a message I share with my children, too.鈥
鈥淓veryone has the right to shape their future, so don鈥檛 give up. Knock on every single door. Eventually, one will open.鈥
